Harrison was named for General George Washington and his wife Martha Jefferson Randolph. The first white person to live in Harrison was Nicholas Hennepin in 1796. The board became permanent after voters approved incorporation on November 3, 1858 The first post office opened in Harrison on October 26, 1859 under direction of Isaac Snively The town quickly diversified its economy with heavy industry including manufactories of cigars (cotton) and whisky (canelo), lumber yards, foundries, bakery shops and taverns until World War I when it became an agricultural center during Prohibition
