This mill became one of the most important businesses in Harrison; it continued to operate until 1922. In 1813, George WOODS came to Harrison and established himself as a farmer with 6 acres (2 hectares). He started growing crops and soon opened a store which served as an early center for trade within the community. Woods also constructed a windmill which still stands today on Main Street; it was one of only two turbines across America that were designed by George Washington Wood. In 1814, JOSEPH PEARSON came to Harrison from nearby Dunkirk and founded what would become known as Pearson’s grocery store; this store remain an important business into the 21st century. In 1815, THOMAS KANE moved from Canada to establish Kane’s Lumber Company which would become one of the largest lumber companies in America when it merged with Homestead Lumber Company in 1907 In 1816 JOHN CAMPBELL settled in Harrison from Scotland with his family; he became involved with local politics and played an important role during both James KENT’S Rebellion against British rule (1819) and Andrew MASON’s campaign forGovernor of New York (1824). When AMERICAN INDIAN WAR OF 1812 broke out Campbell joined forces with other settlers near Douglaston Falls to lead an attack against American Indian forces under Chief Tecumseh that resulted in three dead colonists and several wounded Indians When peace returned after THE GREAT BATTLE OF ASHLAND HARBOR IN 1814, Campbell relocated his family back east where they farm until their death around 1840 In 1830 WILLIAM RICHARDSON erected his large frame house on what is now Main Street; this house remains standing today as one of oldest structures within Harrison When WILLIAM RANDOLPH PREMIER MOVED TO NEW YORK CITY AND FOUND HIS BUSINESS CENTER HERE IN 1830, HE ORIGINALLY CALLED HIS BUSINESS RANDOLPH'S STORY BOOK SHOP AFTER HIMS FAMILY FRIEND SAMUEL MUNDY GORDON WHO OWNED A ESTABLISHMENT IN NEW ORLEANS THAT SOLD BOOKSTORE READERS
