Harrison, New York is a town in Niagara County, New York, United States. The population was 5,567 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Niagara County. The Town of Harrison was established in 1824 and is named for George Washington Harrison, an American Revolutionary War officer who was born in what is now Harrisonburg, Virginia. Harrison had a post office from 1826 to 1828; it was renamed Buffalo on December 14, 1828. There are several theories about why the name changed: one suggests that the post office may have been opened because there were no other towns in the area with that name; another suggests that Buffalo might be because it lay near where Indian traders brought buffalo meat back to Europe after hunting them in North America; still others suggest that Buffalo was chosen as a better place to open a store because most people here spoke Dutch at the time. In 1840, part of what is now Niagara County became part of Erie County and then Ontario County before finally becoming Niagara County. On April 12, 1854, Harrison became a township in Erie County and on November 3rd voters approved changing its name to Harrison Township (NY). The first settler in present-day Harrison Township (NY) was John Purdy who arrived there by boat from Canada on July 24th 1792 while he and his family were looking for land east of Buffalo NY which they could farm and trade with Native Americans for goods they could not produce on their own land. By 1800 there were around 100 settlers living within what is today our township boundaries. On October 15th 1830 when Captain James Kelling left Fort Erie bound for Albany NY he stopped at Whatchey's Ford on the south side of Lake Ontario just north of present day Hamburg NY while en route to meet Admiral David Dixon Porter during Porter's offensive against French forces off Quebec City. When Commodore James Stroud reached Whatchey's Ford we can assume this meeting took place as well as future interactions between unit commanders ashore along with encounters with natives including First Nations individuals such as Tappan Zee Indians and Mohawk warriors operating under British command during this period Some historians believe Commodore Stroud landed his squadron at Whatchey's Ford prior to landing his larger force at Sackets Harbor but this remains unconfirmed evidence Supporting this theory may be circumstantial evidence pointing towards Commodore Stroud disembarking his ship momentarily before making landfall shortly thereafter following an Encounter With A Canoe Crew From One Of The Iroquois Nation’s Fishing Catches Near Sackets Harbor ..As This happened Just Over And Below Where The Ship Now Lying & marks precisely Location For Which That Incident Was Recorded… Lt Col Richard Montgomery Cornwallt Cdr USN led patrol boats upriver searched area & returned without results early next morning.. source: HistoryToday

In addition, Harrison helped secure passage of the Morrill Land-Grant Actof 1862 which allowed for land grants to colleges founded by Congregationalists across America; he also presided over one of America's most controversial presidential administrations when he vetoed a bill creating a national bank.
In 1814, Harrison was an unincorporated community in Chenango County, New York. It was located on the south bank of the Chenango River. The post office at Harrison opened in 1815 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1902.
