In 1802, he married Susannah Barnes and they started to grow some crops and buy land around their home on the east side of Harrison Creek. By 1810 they had bought 5 square miles (12 km2). They named their new settlement after General James Harnett, who had fought in the War of 1812 as a captain with General Andrew Jackson's forces. It was not until 1840 that Harrison renamed himself after Ulysses S. Grant when he became sheriff of Herkimer County after taking office during the Mexican–American War (1846-48). During the American Civil War (1861-65), Harrison sided with Abraham Lincoln over Confederate General Robert Ewing. After Union victory at Gettysburg in July 1863, local Republicans passed an ordinance rewarding citizens for helping Union officers suppress slavery within their jurisdictions by providing them with free housing or goods for two years following emancipation; this program continued into Reconstruction (1868-77) under President Ulysses S. Grant’s watch as part of efforts to protect former slaves from bondage again afterward. Afterward many African Americans moved into Harrison from surrounding towns such as Ossining and Oneonta because it offered better opportunities than living near white farmers who still practiced slavery and refused to provide freedmen with decent housing or benefits like education or job training despite offers made by local businesspeople anxious to attract black workers but also mindful of potential Democratic Party electoral prospects should Reconstruction fail. This process known as absorption happened more slowly among small towns which often lacked resources or political power so could not easily control how people adopted new social norms while larger communities did not have such constraints but saw instead rapid change due to advances in transportation, communication technology, and cheap labor available through waves of migrations called “the Great Migration” beginning around 1915 fueled by World War Iinterests in northern jobs market opportunities
Harrison was first settled in 1704 by the Potters. The next year, the town was granted to George Washington and it became a part of New York State in 1722. The population of Harrison doubled during the Revolutionary War because many refugees from British-controlled forces came here. After the war, the town quickly grew again with new businesses and homes being built. In 1814, Harrison was incorporated as a village. In 1825, Harrison changed its name to Harrisonburg after General Andrew Jackson moved his headquarters there following his victorious invasion of Tennessee.
