After passenger trains stopped running through Nassau County between 1892 and 1913, many small businesses closed their doors or were sold off to larger companies. However, some such as Richardson's Hardware continued to operate until they were forced out of business by advancements in transportation and technology. The Harrison Hardware store continues unchanged to this day as one of Nassau County's most well-known landmarks

Harrison, New York is a town in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 8,859 at the 2010 census. It is the northernmost town in Erie County and lies on the southern border of Niagara Falls National Park. The first European settler in what is now Harrison was Nicholas Wagner in 1798. He built a cabin near present-day Harrisonville and named it after his friend George Washington. In 1814, two brothers, John and Andrew Maguire settled here also and soon became leaders of the community. They were instrumental in building up the local trade and commerce that supported the community through the 1830s and 1840s. In 1846, following part of an Indian war that had occurred nearby for years, settlers from Ontario arrived to found what would eventually becomeNiagara Falls City. This influx of new people changed the character of Harrison; by 1850 its population had increased to 1,500 residents from 300 seasonal workers who farmed corn on a small scale while living off hunting rights granted by Buffalo Bill Cody's ranching empire. After invading Canada during The American Civil War (1861-1865), Americans brought over large numbers of horses and other equipment necessary for military purposes so that Niagara Falls could be defended against British forces; this greatly increased production at mills such as those operated byodus Company which became one of America's most important industrialists during Reconstruction period 1865-1877). During World War II (1939-1945) Harrison served as headquarters for Allied forces occupying Europe; many barracks were constructed there including six hundred officers' quarters used by General Dwight Eisenhower during his stay between April 1945 until May 1947 when he resigned to take command United States Forces Europe Theater; later renamed NATO HQ Bradley Barracks Patton Barracks complex located adjacent to today's High School corner Main Street).
