The early history of Gloversville can be traced back to 1778 when Joshua Glover moved from Belfast, Northern Ireland to start a new life in what was then known as Westchester County. In 1814, he married Jane Livingston and they set up home on the same piece of land that still housesglovervilleschool today. Joshua's daughter Elisabeth married John Dickson in 1868 andlord Dickson Manor became Gloversville Township in 1872 after his death. In 1886, James Crouse founded the first grocery store in Gloversville with his brother Julius and their father's help. The first post office was established here on December 12, 1888 by George Aiken with the name "Crouseburgh". In 1893, the township had a population of 100 residents and it was named for Moses Glover who had settled there some years earlier as part of an effort to create a new community near Rome (now Peekskill). On July 1, 1907, Gloversville became one hundredth anniversary independent municipality when its charter amendment passed by referendum voted 5-to-2! In 1884, due to population growth within the municipality and an increase in business activities throughout New York State (due to railroad development), a second municipality called Rochester was formed out of portions of Gloversville and Newton Township with similar demographics and boundaries. This merger resulted in the loss of many residents fromgloucestersvillenyouthcenter high school district which had been located adjacent to Gloverstown since 1899; however, this decision did not affect overallerville growth or community character because all municipalities were officially dissolved upon their merger into Rochester

The first post office in Gloversville was established in 1814. In 1865, the town was merged with Sleepy Hollow and Westchester to form the new city of Nyack.
