Gloversville is a town in Tioga County, New York, United States. The population was 1,471 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that now makes up Gloversville was first settled in 1795 by Virginia residents who were moving from Queenstown on the Canadian border. In 1820, landowner Nicholas Low purchased of forest and meadow land from the Crown for $2 per acre (0.60¢/acre). A post office called Gloversville was established in 1827 and remained in operation until 1951. The community took its name from General George Washington Glover, who had come to Tioga County as an army officer during the War of 1812. In 1830, John Fenton built a mill on the River Seneca near modern-day Gloversville and started exporting flour to Niagara Falls and Buffalo. By 1840, there were over 20 mills in what is now Tioga County; most were owned by farmers or small businessmen who did not need to export their product because they could sell it domestically or ship it directly to market. However, when a series of devastating freezes hit America during the 1840s and 1850s, many small farmers lost their businesses and had to sell their property or move away; this led to a large influx of ruralTioga County people into Gloversville during this time period which also helped fuel its growth. In 1865-1866 David McKay erected a log cabin on what is now McKee Road for use as his summer home (later known as McKee House). McKay's business ventures soon extended beyond lumbering: he built a gristmill and later became president of Canandaigua & Western Railroad Company (now CN Rail). The town's first school opened in 1868 although tuition for children was free due to state support given through persistent lobbying by parents like Mrs. Julia Ewing whose son Adair attended school there starting in 1870 until he graduated from college in 1886; she then paid for his education via inheritance alone! A two-story frame school building replaced the original log structure around 1880 after damage caused by heavy snowpocalypses throughout the previous winter; both structures still stand today within sight of each other on Main Street between Millstream Drive and Vaughn Road (just west of Anthony’s Pizza).
