Gun targets have been a part of Gloversville, New York for over 100 years. The first target was manufactured in 1853 by Nicholas J. Fenton and Co. at the corner of Washington and Main Streets. The company was known for their cast iron bullseyes and other game targets. In 1907, the town’s first rifle range opened on Meeting Street with 20 guns by George Cushing and Company. Rifle ranges continued to be open until the late 1960s when they were replaced by handguns. Today, Gloversville has two gun ranges which offer lessons to everyone from beginners to experienced shooters. The largest of these is the state-of-the-art Glockers Range on East Market Street which offers sessions for both recreational and competitive shooters. Gunners also have an impressive selection of pistols to choose from including 1911s, AR’s, shotguns, revolvers, rifles etc., all of which are available in various calibers/gauges. In the 1800s, Gloversville was a small town in upstate New York. It was first settled by Dutch immigrants in the 17th century and until the late 1800s, it was known as an agricultural center. In 1837, the town became part of Mechanicstown when that community merged with nearby Kingston. By 1860, Gloversville had about 1,100 residents and it was still an agricultural center. In 1881, the town became a Micropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) and within it, Gloversville became its seat. In 1937, the MSA absorbed parts of seven other towns in Upstate New York to form what is now Buffalo-Niagara Falls MSA. After World War II ended and industrial production declined in New York State,Gloversville experienced rapid growth during the early 21st century thanks to its status as a major port for Buffalo-Niagara Falls Gateway Airport. The community also enjoyed success in professional sports; from 1946 to 1998, Gloversville hosted two years of pro football's Super Bowl each year. However, recent economic conditions have led to declines in both business activity and population size; as of 2000, Gloversville had only about 1,000 residents remaining.
The first people to live in Gloversville were the Wills, who arrived in 1817. The town was named for John Glover, a captain in the Revolutionary War. The town was developed around a Baptist church and school, which continued operation until 1885. After Gloversville's incorporation as a village in 1881, it had its own post office and court system. It lost its status as a village when it merged with Westchester County in 1923.
