It lost its status as a town on March 15, 1898 when it amalgamated with the neighboring villages of Canandaigua and Schenectady to form the new city of Buffalo. As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 1,534 people, 471 households, and 346 families residing in the town. The population density was 54 people per square mile (21/km²). There were 518 housing units at an average density of 27 per square mile (11/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98% White; 0% African American; 0% Native American; 0% Asian; and 2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latinoof any race were 3%. There were 471 households out of which 25% had children underthe ageof 18 living with them, 52% were married couples living together, 10% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28% were non-families. 24% of all households were made up of individuals and 11% had someone living alone who was 65 years old or older. In 1825, the Glovers brothers began trading with Indians onthe Niagara River where they still do business today as traders with the Seneca Nation In 1840, John Glover established a gristmill on Elmwood Creek which became known as "John Glover's Mill". In 1847, Elijah Meeks settled there with his family and started an academy for children called "Meeks' Academy". In 1851, Jno Harned opened up a store in downtown that served as the first post office in Gloverville In 1865, David Sieve bought shares of US Railway Company for $4 per share which made him one of the largest railroad investors in America Sieve donated land to build what would become Central High School which opened its doors on September 15th 1870 Today old Central High School remains one of the most popular tourist destinations in Gloverville thanks to its unique architecture and furnishings from Sieve's era
The Gloversville post office was established in 1892, and remained in operation until it closed in 1979. The town of Gloversville was named for General James Fenton Glover, a hero of the American Civil War. The first post office was located on the corner of Main and Second Streets.
