By 1830, Gloversville had a population of around 1,500 residents and it became an important stop on regional trade routes. In 1836, General James Ketchum arrived in New York City and coveted the land west of Albany for his own ranching operation. Ketchum negotiated with Armstrong to give him half of what is now Gloversville for his ranching efforts. The town continued to grow as other entrepreneurs bought and sold parcels of land in and around its boundaries.
