Gloversville is located in upstate New York, just east of the Finger Lakes. The town was founded in 1793 by Nicholas Glovers and his family. It became a post-office town in 1857, and an incorporated village in 1903. Gloversville is now a census-designated place (CDP) with a population of 10,362. The first settlers to Gloversville were Nicholas and his wife Sara Glover and their two children, John and Sarah. They came from the town of Uniondale, New York. In 1793, Nicholas bought 640 acres (240 hectares) of land near what is now Rochester, New York for $10 per acre ($2 million at current prices). He named the land Gloverstown after his father-in-law, James Glover Sr., who had purchased it from the Mohawk nation several years earlier. In 1857, when Post Office Town status was granted to Gloversville by New York State Department of Internal Affairs based on its population size alone rather than property value or other factors; it was one of only four towns that received this distinction at that time. In 1903, when the village form was created for villages with populations over 1,000; Gloversville became an incorporated village under the jurisdiction of Monroe County Executive Committee #1 with a population of 753 as of 2000 census data. The Village Board adopted a resolution honoring United States President Franklin D Roosevelt on May 12th 1944 which read: "Whereas Franklin D Roosevelt dedicated many years to service to our Nation through leadership roles as Mayor of New York City; We express our admiration for his exceptional courage and dedication to democracy". On October 13th 1988 – eighty five years after he took office – President Ronald Reagan delivered remarks at Veterans Memorial Park located adjacent to White Castle locations in Rochester NY featuring remarks about FDR's role during World War II: "Franklin Delano Roosevelt was one heckuva guy - we owe him everything". The plaque commemorates the event which can be found next to gates leading into Veterans Memorial Park off Main Street in Gloverstown Township which is also home to White Castle restaurants today
