Gloversville is a small town in upstate New York, located on the East Side of the Finger Lakes. The population was 9,693 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Erie County region. The first European settlers in Gloversville were Dutch colonists who arrived in 1614. The first known name for Gloversville was "Willemstadt," which means "Village of Willem." In 1795, Abraham Glover established a gristmill in what is now Gloversville and named it after his father-in-law, Nathaniel Greene. In 1812, John Glover founded a school in what is now Gloversville and donated land to build a courthouse and jail. The town was incorporated as a village on November 5, 1821. In 1865, when Erie County was created from portions of Ontario and Niagara Counties, parts of Gloversville were annexed into the new county. The original mill tower still stands today adjacent to the former glazed corn cribs that are used as part ofglove production at the local millinery store on Main Street in Gloversville. A replica of this structure can be found at nearby Webster Hall (now home to Webster University).
