Gloversville is a town in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 2,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European settlers in what is now Gloversville were French colonists who arrived in 1664 and named it "Tontine". The name was derived from "Glovers" (a place name in England), which means "passage through or near a ford". In 1792, the area became part of Canada and was renamed after Lord Cornwallis when he took possession of New York following the American Revolutionary War. Tory landowner John Glover donated all of his holdings to the town on November 15, 1815. The first school opened in 1821. The post office called Gloversville "Conyersburgh" until 1872; then it changed to its present name. In 1861, local resident James Waddell donated land to form a reservoir on the Niagara River; this led to Gloversville's nickname as Riverside Township because most of its residents lived along both banks of that stream. In 1899, construction began on what would become Niagara Falls Boulevard and by 1907 it had been completed to within one mile (1 km) of where it now stands; this made Gloversville one of only two towns in New York State with streets that run straight down hillsides instead of intersecting at intersections like most other municipalities. According to the 2000 US Census there were 1,951 people living in Gloversville village and 2,813 residents residing in the township across three ZIP codes: 14237-14244 (the village), 14311-14312 (the township), and 14501-14502 (the ZIP code for Gloversville). As reported by decennial censuses since 1970 there has been an increase (+18%) from 1,726 people (−2% due mainly to internally displaced persons or refugees) living within Village boundaries up through 2006 when their populations crossed over into Township limits - but saw an overall decrease (-5%) during2007 (-10% due principally to internal migration within Village boundaries) despite continued growth (+3%) between 2007 & 2010 citing evidence from official community statements indicating more than half a dozen new villages have formed since amalgamation took effect on January 1st 2010 including some east side developments adjacent to I/O Lake Ontario not shown on previous censuses
