The town's first school was built in 1814 and it served as the primary educational institution for children from Gloversville until 1955. The last teacher to teach at the school died in 1978. In 1916, the New York State Normal School located on Main Street began offering higher education to students from Gloversville. It closed in 1957 and is now known as Clarkson University.
