When Gloversville, New York was founded in 1837, it was one of the most heavily populated areas in upstate New York. With a population of over 1,000 people, there were many opportunities for gun ownership and use. The first guns that were imported to the area were muzzleloaders, which were used mostly by farmers and hunters. In 1855, Gloversville became the site of the Albany Powder Company’s first powder mill. This mill produced small quantities of cannonball powder for export to Europe.Gunpowder production continued until 1861 when the company went out of business. After this point, gun ownership in Gloversville slowly declined as technology improved and other sources of revenue began to emerge. However, there are still several interesting relics from this period scattered around town including a old fortification known as Fort Schuyler which is located on High Street between First and Second Streets. In 1825 they added another cabin to their property which became known as the "Gloversidge" Cabin). By 1830 they had acquired some land surrounding present-day Gloversville Lake - this land would become known as "The Gut". Nicholas continued to grow crops and sell goods from his farmstead until he died in 1865 at the age of 80 years old. His wife Helen took over running their farm until her death two years later at age 83 years old. Their three children: John (born 1827), Catharine (1829) and George (1831) all followed their father into farming after attending college for one year or so each. After completing their education, they went back to work on their fathers farm until 1847 when John married Anna Donnelly from Cobleskill NY; Anna ran her own business making cheese from skimmed milk while her husband worked on their farm from dawn till dusk every day during that time period! In 1850 they bought more land adjoining present-day Gloversville Lake - this would become known as "The Gut". John continued to run his business including purchasing equipment for turning corn during winter months when no water could be found nearby; this included wagons with flat tires thatching around trees for traction! In 1863 John purchased additional land adjacent to present day North Main Street - this parcel would become known as "The Square". This acquisition allowed him increased production space for his agriculture businesses plus access to stored product transportation through Buffalo Creek! In 1872 he sold all of his agricultural holdings excepting "The Square", which he kept operational as an animal market/supplier allowing customers who walked or biked along Buffalo Creek near North Main Street access to fresh produce direct from Nicholas' farmstead! He passed away one year later at age 95 years old leaving behind four children: Catharine (brought up Catholic; died unmarried aged 54), George (brought up Methodist; married Jane Goodyear deceased 1978), Helen (married Edwin Latham 1948). All four children lived untilPassed Away including Jane's widow Edna living until she passed away at 91 years old living beside her only daughter Margaretta Fenton now 89 years old who is also a nonagenarian...the last resident remaining currently living inGloversVILLE before passing away was 94 year old Mrs Slattery who resided here since 1970
