Glens Falls is a small town in upstate New York, located on the east bank of the Niagara River. It is bordered by Utica to the south, Onondaga County to the north, and Canandaigua County to the west. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. The name Glens Falls comes from two words: Glen (a glen) and falls (a waterfall). The first residents of Glens Falls were Mohawk Indians who inhabited what is now Glens Falls until 1714 when they were forced out by white settlers. In 1763, Colonel John Armstrong founded a trading post called Fort Armstrong in what is now Utica. He named it after his father-in-law's home in Scotland, Fort Loudoun near Edinburgh. In 1803, General James Sullivan moved his headquarters from Kingston to Utica where he formed a brigade of volunteers for General George Washington's American Expedition against Genghis Khan. He named his brigade "the Legion of Decency." In 1804, General Sullivan again moved his headquarters to Utica and appointed Major-General David Hunter as its commander. In 1805 Governor Isaac Brock announced that he had created an additional district comprising parts of Onondaga and Oneida Counties for military purposes only under the command of Lieutenant-Governor Peter Van Wyck; this area became known as Brock's District No 2. In 1808, Glens Falls was purchased by Augustus Porter from the Mohawk nation for $2 million dollars in present day US currency. Porter subdivided it into lots and built four blocks containing 338 houses on Broadway which are still standing today – one block fronts onto Riverside Drive which runs through Glensfalls today between First Avenue North and Main Street South/West while another block fronts onto Fourth Street West between Riverside Drive East and Fifth Avenue North/South/East. Porter renamed it "Porterstown" after himself because he felt that there would be few if any other people living in this part of upstate NY besides Indian Settlers due to its close proximity to Buffalo City on Lake Erie combined with its beautiful natural surroundings including rolling hills covered with trees providing plenty of cover during hunting season etcetera etcetera etcetera etcetera etcetera... sortof like how London has been called Middlesex or something since so many people have lived here! Anyway Porterstown became famous for producing high quality flour products such as Citizens' Bank Flour which continued being produced until 1965 when National Grains Corporation bought out Citizens' Bank Flour production rights for $1 billion dollar making Glensfalls an official grain marketing center! Furthermore during WWI German forces raided Porterstown several times resulting in the loss of several hundred homes & farmsteads however no one was ever prosecuted resultant in some people thinking that maybe Germany somehow got away with murder! Glens Falls, New York is a small town located in the Finger Lakes region of central New York. The population was 7,036 at the 2010 census. It borders Ontario to the north and west, Schenectady County to the east, and Montgomery County to the south. The town has a history dating back to 1784 when it was named for Colonel John Glencairn as part of an area that became called Glens Falls after General James Wolfe's victory over the French at Quebec in 1559. In 1885,glensfalls incorporated as a borough. The first settler in Glens Falls was Captain George Burt who arrived in 1784 from Connecticut with his family. He built a cabin on what is now Main Street and named it "Burt's Ford." The first post office was established in 1787 and was known as "Newburgh." In 1814, Postmaster General Gideon Welles issued a proclamation ordering all settlers within two miles of Fort Erie (present-day Niagara Falls) not to plant crops or build houses without receiving government approval. Two years later, Glens Falls received its charter as an incorporated village under the name "Finger Lakes". In 1825, Fayetteville annexingglen falls began annexation proceedings but were eventually successful In 1831, Henry Dearborn donated land near present-day Schenectady Township for incorporation into Glenfalla by order of Governor Edward Livingston; however this effort failed due to lack of volunteers. By 1840 there were only 5 residents living in Glenfallsa while 12 families lived around Fayetteville In 1845 local resident Cornelius Vanderbilt offered 1/5 interest on 10 acres (3 hectares) he had purchased from British Loyalist David Herritage for $200 ($ million today). This offer allowed him to purchase most of what is now Glenfalla from Herritage including what is now Main Street In 1865 local resident Zephyr Teachout erected a flour mill on Dam Creek which continued operation until 1946 despite being destroyed by fire earlier that year . After her death her husband Cyrus Ward Woltman leased it fromthe trustees and operated it until his death in 1961 . In 1969 Woltman's grandson ran it until 1978 when it went out of business again The first school opened in 1847 along with Griggs Bank which still operates today . A high school followed suit in 1951 A young mannamed Alan Turing attended one day classes here between October 1940 and November 1941 before spending three years working at Bletchley Park where he created some of Britain’s most famous computer programs
