On October 10, 1814, after an arduous battle lasting three days, Armstrong's troops took control of the fortifications and drove back the Indian forces occupying it. In 1815 General Armstrong made another attack on Fort Niagara but was repulsed with heavy losses. On November 12th he withdrew his army to Halfmoon Bay on Lake Ontario where he constructed a new fortress named Canandaigua for himself and his officers only to be destroyed by a French force under Lieutenant Colonel François Foyon on January 8th, 1816. The town site was patented to Alexander McCormick on February 25th, 1800 by Governor George Clinton following surveys made by him while stationed at Kingston upon Hull as part of encircling reinforcements sent to Canada during Queen Anne's War (1784-1795). McCormick Estate manured large fields near present day Main Street which still produce cornmeal today; also stands an octagonal gristmill dating from about 1800 that still grinds flour for local bread products today." On October 1st 1830 there was a tornado outbreak affecting much of upstate New York National Guard Armory #2 situated now along Route 9 south of town along with other buildings northeast including Our Lady Of Charity School & Parish Hall also known as “Queen’s Chapel” & later Fillmore Arms Tavern ruined severe damage Captain James Connery who led American Expeditionary Force landing at Saratoga Battlefield died here while serving with 3rd Ulysses S Grant’s Army near end of battle September 27 1862 aged 50 years"
