The first settlement in Glens Falls was made on the site of present-day Glenville by Congregationalists in 1792. It was not until 1824 that a post office was established there and the town took its name from the falls located south of it on the Mohawk River. For many years, Glens Falls acted as an important stop along the Erie Canal trade route between Buffalo and Albany; however, with increasing railroad construction through central New York and into Pennsylvania during this time, transportation requirements changed and Glens Falls lost its importance as a commercial center in the mid-19th century. During World War II, much effort went into making Fort Drum available for use as an ammunition dump; however due to subsidence caused by artillery fire from nearby Allied airfields overglowing during that war, only about 10% of what was stored here survived intact until 1949 whenGLENS FALLS WATERWORKS INC., founded by George Washington Carver (1867-1946), began operating it as an agricultural production center processing cornmeal, wheat flour and other products from area farmers As economic activity slowed down throughout most of the 21st century due to increased competition from elsewhere in Central New York State, GLENS FALLS WATERWORKS INC., although still functioning intermittently since early 21st century) has been slowly mothballed while new facilities have been built near Auburn (on Lake Ontario) and Malone (in Ulster County). In recent years several proposals have been made to revive GLENS FALLS WATERWORKS INC.; one proposal would see it become a public company managed by nonprofit organizations who would maintain it continuously without subsidy while another plan would see it privatized and operated primarily by special interests who would gain access to its secrets
