Glens Falls, New York is a small town in upstate New York, located on the banks of the Susquehanna River. The population was 7,848 at the 2000 census. It lies within Ulster County and is served by Glens Falls High School and Glens Falls Township. The first permanent settler in what would become Glens Falls was James Fenton in 1782. He built a log cabin on the banks of the river. The community took its name from Fenton's home village in Scotland - Glenflester. In 1825, John Armstrong founded Armstrong's Ferry Landing on the Susquehanna River and busied himself shipping goods to market from his ferry landing. This led to Armstrong being called "the Father of Glens Falls." In 1853, Capt. Amos Treadway established Tannery Point on what is now Tannery Road near present-day downtown Glens Falls. tannery point became an important stop on the local trade route for farmers and merchants looking to get their goods out to market quickly and avoid tariffs imposed by Great Britain during The American Revolution (1775-1783). An early post office was established at Tannery Point in 1857; it closed two years later due to low mail traffic. In 1861, George Washington Carver set up a fruit stand along South Main Street in what is now downtown Glens Falls, which soon became one of Carver's most popular tourist attractions (he also operated a general store). By 1870, there were twenty businesses operating in downtownGlensfalls; by 1900 this number had increased to seventy-six businesses with a total payroll of $10 million! By 1910, over one thousand people lived or worked in downtownGlensfalls; by 1920 this number had grown to more than two hundred fifty residents! During World War I (1914-1918), many jobs were created asglen falls filled with soldiers stationed nearby at Fort Leavenworth (now Kansas City), Camp Upton (now West Point), and Lackland Air Force Base(now San Antonio) between 1914 and 1918; asglen falls grew larger military installations began using part of its land for parade grounds and other purposes! After World War II ended, many factories closed down throughout Upstate New York due largely to economic recession following The Postwar Boom (1945-1950). However, business revived thanks primarily to new offers for factory space resulting from technological advances such as television production plants that used large open lots across Upstate New York during that period! After several years of steady growth lead by companies like IBM and Intel,[1] developers purchased contaminated land adjacent to Pritchard Lake off Route 9 north of town beginning development known as Northside Place[2][3]. Glens Falls is a small town in Niagara County, New York, United States. The population was 2,512 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. Glens Falls is one of the oldest towns in upstate New York and was first settled by Dutch farmers in 1772. The original name of the town was "Emmonsburgh". In 1827, Glens Falls became part of Canandaigua Township and until 1954 it was part of Ontario County. As early as 1772, farmers in what is now Glens Fall had begun to settle in this area due to its abundance of fresh water resources. By 1800, there were about 30 families living here and farming corn, beans and potatoes from scratch or renting land from local Native American tribes. In 1827, five other villages formed the Town of Emmonsburgh: Beechworth (later renamed Canandaigua), Bolton Landing (renamed Glenford after General James A. Bolton), Clinton (renamed Albion after George Clinton), Holland Landing (later renamed Alfred) and Indian Point (renamed logs). In 1837-38 two checkershooters shot an important animal migration route for settlers over Lake Erie; thus began the town's nickname "the checkerhead." The first school opened in 1847 on Main Street with 15 students and four teachers who taught reading, writing and arithmetic among others before closing due to lack of funds just a year later. A new school building was completed in 1850 on Third Street across from present day Elmira College which served grades K-12 until 1958 when it closed its doors permanently due to budget cuts that also impacted nearby Elmira College which continued serving grades 9-12 until 1973 when it too closed its doors permanently following a fire that destroyed most buildings on campus including their library which remains open today as Elmira Union Free School District No 1 Campus). 2 post office buildings were built between 1840 and 1860: One at 5th Avenue & South Road near present day Genesee Valley Airport/Resort while another at Sixth Avenue & West Road near present day King’s Parkway Shopping Center served mail until 1959 when both received federal funding to be replaced by one larger facility on North Park Drive that still serves as the current Glens Fall Post Office today! After yet another decline during World War II with no jobs available outside town because so many people had left for war effort or other opportunities elsewhere within NY state then things started looking up again thanks largely to baby boomers coming back home starting out doing some light manufacturing work then slowly but surely through various economic downturns especially during 2008-2009 heavy construction contractor job offers started flowing into our small community increasing retail spending power generating tax revenue thereby improving odds for maintaining existing infrastructure despite dwindling federal funds resulting from sequestration being enacted effective January 1st 2009 . At 4pm EST on Wednesday September 11th 2009 all 130 years old Orange Female Veteran WWI veteran Mrs Dorothy Ladd died suddenly after long battle with cancer aged 85 years!!! This sudden sad event caused chaos throughout our small community as everyone rushed towards her funeral service held privately at Our Lady Of Loretto Church located behind her home prior to burial tomorrow morning followed by private cremation…..An outpouring of grief ensued as we struggled through this difficult time since she had been such a vital part not only of our community but also my personal life for almost 40 years! Her loss will be felt throughout this small cornerofNY
Glens Falls is a town in Saratoga County, New York, United States. The population was 9,843 at the 2010 census. The first settler in Glens Falls was James Fenton and his family in 1814. By 1830, Glens Falls had a population of 350 people. The town started as a mill and sawmill town on the north side of the river between what is now West Main Street and South Main Street. The original mill was destroyed by fire in 1834, but another was built soon afterwards downstream on the south side of the river. The first post office opened in 1835. In 1854, American Express Company established a business office here before moving to Utica two years later. In 1865, Glens Falls became part of Albany County when that county was created from parts of Saratoga and Schenectady counties. By 1880 there were 1,500 residents living in Glens Falls; by 1910 it had grown to 6,000 with an associated industry of iron manufacturing and other heavy industries until World War II when glazed tiles began arriving from China which causedania (a type of glass) production to drop significantly
