The name Glens Falls comes from the falls on the river Glen and from "gleam" or "glitter." The first settler in what is now Glens Falls was Peter Geddes who arrived in 1784. By 1812 there were twelve families living here. In 1837, John Crouse built a sawmill on the river near present day Main Street and it soon became an important center for lumbering and other industry. In 1853, Alexander Shields opened a hotel which still stands today known as Shields's Hotel & Casino. In 1892, George Sneath donated land to build an Episcopal church and graveyard on what is now North Avenue. On July 1st of that year, Glens Falls had its incorporation as a incorporated village with 7 residents. On December 12th of that year Glens Falls officially became part of the Town of Niagara when it ratified a resolution by the state legislature calling for such action following passage of legislation authorizing annexation by Orange County into New York State On October 1st 1909 (the date marked by GLENS FALLS TOWN HISTORY BOOK) Mayor Aiken reported that since his inauguration on September 16th nine months earlier there had been no crime in town despite being one of the mostPolice departments in upstate NY!!!
