Glaciers pushed large amounts of water through central New York valley creating two major valleys: One downgradient from Hudson Bay ran along today's Mohawk Trail into NYcounterclockwise around Lake Ontario while another upgradient flowed along present day Route 6 east into Erie County today’s Seneca Nation territory*** Many early settlers were Quakers who fled religious persecution in England*** There are several theories about how Glens falls got its name *** Some believe it originated with local farmer George Fox who suggested renaming his community Glencoe after then-recently killed deer known locally as “the Glencoe Killians” *** Others contend that it derives from Gaelic language word "gleann," meaning glen or mountain peak *** After one winter spent exploring this area by boat on the Niagara River and discovering a small stream called Killian’s Creek due west of present day Glens Falls village center – settler Elijah Morse renamed the stream Glencoe after manager at miller John Cranch *** In 1792 Colonel Jonathan Dayton founded Dayton Forge Works here making cannons and other cannon parts*** This forge continued operations until 1861**** When Union forces burned Dayton Forge Works on July 12th 1861 during their campaign against Confederate troops under Robert E Lee***** In 1865 post office moved to new building built on current site ***** By 1870 there were only 8 residents living here**** AGLEN FALLS WAS FIRST SETTLEMENT IN GLENS FALLS VILLAGE CENTER On March 25th 1881 four men – Cyrus Sargent (1851-1910), Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr.(1858-1936), Whittier Matthews(1860-1928) & Edward Everett Hale(1852-1926) set out from Schenectady aboard ship SS Corinna for what would be their final journey west ***** They arrived atcurrentsite just north of Gretsch Avenue on May 13th 1881************* Five days later they had erected a sod house using poles brought overland fromONeila * On October 3rd 1881James K.*Adams issued an order prohibiting settlement within five miles of Ontario except by those authorized by him*** BY THE TIME ADAMS ORDERED POST OFFICE TO REMAIN LOCATED NEAR Gretsch AVENUE IT WAS CHANGED TO GLENN FALLS ON APRIL 5TH OF THAT YEAR

Glens Falls, New York was founded in 1795 by Captain John Glenn and his brother James. The town was named after the falls of the river Glens which flows through the town. The first settlers were farmers and their families who started to live in the area around present-day Glenflester Road and Indian Path. They used hoes, axes, and other tools to clear land for farming. By 1800, there were a few hundred people living in Glens Falls. In 1814, Captain John Glenn became a United States Congressman from New York state. He traveled to Canada to purchase supplies for the U.S military during the War of 1812. When he returned home, he found that many of his family's holdings had been confiscated by Canadian authorities because they belonged to William Tryon, one of America's most powerful men at that time. In retaliation for captain Glenn's victory over Tryon at the Battle of Lundy's Lane, American officials decided to give back some of those lands to their original owners - includingCaptain Glenn himself! Thanks to Captain Glenn's actions, Glens Falls began its long journey back into prosperity! The first post office in Glens Falls was established on July 2, 1824; it was renamed Glenflester Post Office on December 4th of that year due to its location near Glenflester Lake!
