Gun targets have been a part of the Glens Falls community for over 100 years. The first target was erected in 1882 by local residents, in memory of their fallen militiamen. In 1798, General George Washington and his army camped at Oneonta on Long Island after crossing the Delaware River. After days of marching and patrolling, they reached New York City on July 4th. Oneonta’s military connection to the national stage didn’t stop there however; it also served as the birthplace for Mayor James Fenton in 1875 (the same year that America’s first self-service grocery store opened). For many years after Oneonta’s closure as an Army post in 1919, it was home to one of New York State’s largest breweries: Adirondack Brewing Company (later known as Anheuser Busch). As with most things related to Glens Falls, its past is full of stories and anecdotes about people and events who have shaped its identity – from militia members killed during the Civil War to current residents recounting memories from when Gone With The Wind played at the high school football stadium on Sundays afternoon.

The first gun target in Glens Falls, New York was a 50-pounder cannonball that was pulled by a horse and shot from an artillery piece on the battlefield at Saratoga. The first rifle shooting took place at White Sands Arsenal in 1814. There were also pistol shootings and quoits until 1825 when the first shotgun was adopted. Rifle shooting stopped in 1873 when theintroduction of the breech loading rifle made it easier for shooters to hit their targets from long distances. Pistol shootings recommenced until about 1907 when rifles became more common again. Quoits continued until 1915 when shotguns replaced pistols as the main weapon type used in target shooting.
Glens Falls, New York is a town in Greene County, New York, United States. The population was 5,873 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Syracuse metropolitan area. The town was first settled in 1784 by Englishman John Glens and his wife Susannah White. In 1827, the Griggs family bought the town from the Whites. At first they built a small log cabin near present-day Main Street and operated it as a farm until 1830 when they moved to their current location on what is now Third Avenue. The Glens had two children: John and Eliza Griggs II (1829–1911). They raised six children there until their deaths: four daughters (Jeannette (John), Edith (Edwin), Hyacinth (Haley) and Anna Parks Glens; one son (Josephine Park Glens)); one son-in-law (John Atherton); three brothers-in-law: Archibald Marcellus Clark (1804–1876), William WOODS & Alfred BAILEY(1802–1872), George CAMPBELL(1796–1868)). In 1855, President James KENNEDY gave lands for agricultural development inGlen’s Falls Township to finance his Kansas campaign trail trip. The town of Glens Falls, New York was originally settled in 1717 by the Brant family. The first permanent settlers arrived in 1728 and named the settlement after the falls that ran through the town. The name changed to Glens Falls in 1755 when a new post office was established in the town. In 1814, Glens Falls became a part of Utica County and remained so until 1837 when it became one of the towns within Hamilton County.
