Over time, other settlers also built homes here including Brigadier General Alexander Hamilton who died there in 1802 while commanding an expedition against British forces under Cornwallis during the American Revolution. In 1865, residents of nearby Canandaigua voted to secede from Ulster County and form their own government which they called Claremont Borough; however, this decision was overturned by New York State authorities two years later when Claremont became part of Utica Township. In 1877-1879, members of the Glensburgh clan attended an agricultural fairsponsored by GeneseeCounty Agricultural Society at Niagara Falls; during this period some eighty families lived within one mile (one kilometer) of downtown Glens Falls with about seventyfive barns and three thousand acres (one hundred fifty hectares) of farmland irrigated with water diverted from Buffalo Creek). During these years much progress was made for local education as well as for industrial development with erection of school buildings such as Baptist Tabernacle School (1877), Masonic Temple School (1879), First Presbyterian Church (1881), Congregationalist church (1901), Methodist Episcopal church (1906).
