The Glens Falls community has been inhabited by humans for over 10,000 years. The first Europeans to come through the area were French traders in the early 16th century. In 1814, General James A. Burnside and his army invading New York City were stopped at the Battle of Saratoga by Ulysses S. Grant and his army, who had arrived earlier that day on horseback. At this event, Americans began to take notice of theGlens Falls area and started to arrive in increasing numbers. In 1821, a group of men from New York State led by Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Crouse traveled down river from Albany to purchase land in what is now Glens Falls from Chief Joseph Braddock’s nonprofit company. They named their new settlement after General Crouse’s father-in-law, Senator William Pitt Fessenden (1796-1868). The town was first known as Pittsburg Landing due to its location near Pittstown Creek on Pennsylvania Avenue in downtown Glens Falls. In 1825, John Dickey erected a log cabin on the site of present day Main Street/State Road 6 intersection just north of where US Route 12 crosses the creek south of downtown Glens Falls. This was glenfalls pioneer business headquarters until it burned down in 1916 while undergoing reconstruction following damage caused by a severe ice storm two months earlier.. In 1984, Glens Falls residents voted to annex themselves into Elizabethtown after deciding that they wanted more control over their community’s finances and social life than they had ever experienced before. After years of negotiation, annexation happened on December 4th, 1994 under the leadership of then-Mayor Edwin Wittek who served until 2003 when he resigned amid controversy over how much power he delegated to other officials within his municipality while neglecting day-to-day operations at Glens Falls Village Hall. Today, Glens Falls is still an unincorporated community but has significant marketing ties to Elizabethtown through its incorporation intoElizabethtown Micropolitan Statistical Area (EMSA) as well as its relationship with nearby Kingston where it has annexed several buildings used by both municipalities including Glens Falls Village Hall and Town Hall Annexation Road which forms part of glenfallsvillagehallandehomeslink LLC
