Glens Falls, New York is a small town in upstate New York. The population was 1,886 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo-Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name of Glens Falls comes from two sources: one is the falls located on the Tannehill River just east of town, and the other is an area near the falls that was swampy and marshy before settlers arrived in 1795. In 1827, Daniel Noyes bought land in what is now Glens Falls from Friedrich Wilhelm Greiser for $1 per acre (a price that has been increased multiple times). The town site chosen by Noyes and his son Isaac were on or near Spring Brook (now Canandaigua Street). Noyes named his new community after George Washington's Mount Vernon, which he had seen while touring Western New York during his presidency (1793-97). On July 14, 1830, General John Forbes captured Fort Niagara while besieging its garrison at Greenock on Lake Erie; when news reached him of this event, Forbes ordered his army to march to Niagara within three days so that he could celebrate with a public dinner there.
