Glens Falls, New York is a town in Sullivan County, New York, United States. The population was 4,868 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Sullivan County. The first settlement in what is now Glens Falls was on the east side of the Hudson River near present-day White Plains. In 1814, Alexander McKay founded an agricultural community called Newtown on this site and named it for himself and his wife's home in Scotland; also known as Johnstown or Kinloss (now part of Schenectady). On November 10, 1814, during the American Revolution, General George Washington visited Newtown and ordered all supplies to be delivered to Fort Orange without delay because he believed that Patriots would "destroy everything" if they couldn't get their hands on arms and munitions quickly. In 1828, J.P. Morgan bought 1/4 mile (1 km) of land from Jabez Cornell for $5 per acre (2 km²), which became Glens Falls Township. The first post office opened in October 1830 under the name of White Plains but changed its name to Glens Falls on February 17th, 1831 due to political pressure from then-Governor Cyrus Swett Morrill Sr.. On July 14th 1870, a fire destroyed most of downtown Glens Falls which included over 100 homes including those of Governor Morris' family. The damage was estimated at $22500 ($ million equivalent today). Reconstruction began immediately with new construction replacing much of what had been lost including many homes where families still resided today; however some residents were forced to leave when prices for housing increased again following Reconstruction until1945 when Mayor James Fenton replaced Governor Morris as state treasurer causing glen falls' economy to rebound greatly thanks largely to Fenton's policies along with private enterprise creating new jobs throughouttowns like retailing and real estate development
The Glens Falls Bridge, also called the George Washington Bridge, was a toll bridge in New York City that spanned the riverglen between Glens Falls and the borough of Manhattan. It was opened on July 27, 1892, as part of an expansion of the New York City Subway system. The bridge was demolished in 1957 to make way for the Queens–Manhattan Expressway.
