This event helped convince US troops not to attack Fort Niagara during the war with Great Britain The Village was formed on January 10th 1859 when all but 2 residents voted to form a village board which would have powers such as electing officers as well as creating regulations for the village including fire code and zoning laws
The first European to set foot on the present day Glens Falls, New York, was Nicholas-Jacques de Champlain in 1611. The town's name is thought to be derived from the French word "glebe" meaning "a low rise." In 1792, General George Washington and his army camped near the site of today's Glens Falls during their campaign against France. In 1814, a post office was established at what is now Glens Falls. On July 3 of that year, a small fire started by two men while working in a meadow destroyed most of the local sawmill and mills had been built since 1792. The first store in Glens Falls was built in 1836 by Michael Hickey. A bank also opened in that year. The first settler to purchase land here was James Rochefort who bought 316 acres (0.96 km2) northeast of town in 1837. By 1860, there were over 100 farms scattered throughout what is now Glens Falls Township and 5 stores and 2 churches located here. On November 25, 1861, President Abraham Lincoln delivered his Gettysburg Address from glenfalls village Green which lies just east of where he gave his speech from Ford’s Theatre on October 14th: “4 score and 7 years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent new nation, conceived in Liberty; dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal; That they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights; That among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness." This event helped spur horse-drawn wagons used for transportation between Boston and Albany which were essential for soldiers traveling down Oneida Path during the American Civil War (1861-1865).
