Glens Falls, New York is a town in Chenango County, New York, United States. The population was 1,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Utica-Rome, NY Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Glens Falls was Captain John Allan who established a trading post on April 20, 1788 near present-day Glenville. In 1824, David Scherrer purchased land east of Glens Falls from the Scherrers for $4 per acre. This location became known as Scherrertown and later as Schenectady. In 1825 the village of Glens Falls was organized and began to develop around its square mile original site with two churches and thirteen dwellings. By 1830 it had grown to include over one hundred dwellings and a schoolhouse. In 1835 George Wirtz built a gristmill which became an important commercial center for the area until it closed in 1886 due to lack of customers or competition from larger mills in Utica or Rome. A new mill was built about 1870 by Atherton & Company but this mill failed within five years due to low water power and flooding that occurred frequently during heavy rains. In 1890 Alfred Fenton bought the old mill which he operated until his death in 1912. After his death local farmers began using electricity to grind corn which caused problems because there wasn’t enough voltage available at home so they had to buy generators from outside suppliers In 1915 harnessing power came ashore when an oil tanker exploded on rocks off shore breaking open several tankers full of gasoline that were stored offshore after being used as ballast for other ships while anchored off Utica Harbor bringing muchneeded revenue into town . Although most residents did not experience any physical harm their homes were damaged including many Mrs Fenton’s children played outside all day long without getting wetter than their mothers could manage . glenfalls main street today still bears her name
