Fenton and his family were among the earliest people to live in what is now Glens Falls. He built a cabin on the side of a hill near present-day Main Street and First Avenue. He also farmed land around his home for years before moving to what is now downtown Glens Falls in 1828. Fenton's son John Fenton became one of the town's most prominent citizens and served as postmaster from 1830 until 1853; he also ran unsuccessfully for office four times (1837, 1840, 1846, 1850). John Fenton is considered one of the founders of modern day Glens Falls because he helped start schools and set up businesses hereabouts during its early days. In 1840 John Fenton married Eliza Wright; they had five children: James [Jr.] (1841-1923), Martha (1844-1936), Lydia (1847-1935), George [Jr.] (1849-1920) and Juanita (1851-1945). Theyed moved away from their original location but returned to Glensfalls several times during their lifetime; finally they died there in 1923 and 1945 respectively.* In 1865 local merchant Alfred Waterman opened an grocery store onMain Street where today's First Avenue meets Main Street* *Eleanor Waterman Healy later donated her husband's buildings - including three buildings on Main Street that still stand - to form what are currently known as The Alfred Waterman House Museum/Griffin History Center at 202 Main Street., Inc., which operates it as a museum today

Glens Falls, New York is a town in Upstate New York, United States. The population was 9,872 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Oneonta-Albany-Cheektowaga Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Glens Falls were farmers who arrived in 1788 and built a log cabin on the current site of Main Street. In 1807, John Armstrong founded Armstrong's Brewery in Glens Falls after purchasing land from the local Mohawk tribe. The brewery became one of the largest brewing companies in North America and produced beer for both internal consumption and export to other parts of the United States. In 1868, John Hargrave opened Hargrave's grocery store on Main Street which remains one of the town's most prominent businesses to this day. In 1916, Glens Falls was incorporated as a village by an act of its citizens under the name "Oneonta". The incorporation provided forvillage government with three trustees - two men and one woman -who were responsible for all aspects of municipal life including taxation, public works, housing development, education and social services. The village remained an unincorporated community until it was annexed by Oneonta in 1957 following a referendum vote by residents over whether or not to remain detached from their larger neighbor. During World War II, glens falls served as an important stop on military supply routes between upstate New York and Canada via Lake Ontario through what is now Niagara County. Many soldiers stopped at glen falls during their march through central NY; some even stayed for dinner at Armstrong's Brewery before continuing their journey eastwards into Canada
Glens Falls was first settled by Dutch colonists in the late 17th century. The community formed around a small creek, which they named Glen Falls after the falls that surrounded it. The first post office was established in 1793, and the first school was opened in 1807. By 1830, Glens Falls had a population of around 100 people. However, during the Panic of 1837, many residents fled to New York City due to economic hardship. In 1840, Glens Falls became a town and remained so until 1959.
