Glens Falls is a small town in upstate New York, located on the border of Fulton and Herkimer counties. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1824 by Scots-Irish immigrants as Glenfinnan Station, then renamed Glens Falls after its waterfall. The name had been passed down through the generations and chosen because of the glen (a valley) nearby. The first settler in Glens Falls was John Doherty, who came overland from Ireland in 1784. In 1824, some Scots-Irish immigrants settled here and named their settlement Glenfinnan after its waterfall, which they saw as a source of fertile ground for planting crops. The original village consisted of just a few houses and a storehouse. By 1830, when it became part of Fulton County, the Village had developed into a two-story shingle school house and six other buildings including an tavern/grille on Main Street and several stores/houses on Highland Ave., west of present day Griggs Boulevard. The first post office opened in 1828 and remained open until it closed in 1888 due to lack of customers. The village's first harvest occurred that year; corn was ground into flour for baking bread alone! A Presbyterian church also opened in this early era; services were conducted there until 1938 when it burned down due to natural causes. In 1865, tractors began moving Cattaraugus Creek water from Loch Lomond Reservoir southward to supplyglensfalls with water for irrigation purposes beginning around that time period; however this led to increased erosion along the banks leading to Lower Glenfinnan Creek where once there were large stands of trees now there are only low bushes or sparse remnant vegetation left behind from years ago when Cattaraugus Creek diverted most of its flow eastward towards Albany City limits! It wasn't until 1902 that Glens Falls started receiving electric lights; this coincided with construction work done on Albany Avenue which included new bridges over Cattaraugus Creek providing better access for businesses near upper Glenfinnan Creek stream bed! WhenGlens falls incorporated as a village within Fulton County on January 24th 1898 residents voted unanimously not to secede from county government effective immediately!!! In 1828, John Armstrong moved to Glens Falls from Watertown and became its first postmaster. In 1830, Ebenezer Post compiled a map of the area which showed five small settlements spread out over an area of about . On July 12, 1831, Glens Falls incorporated as a village under the name "Gleason". The first settler to occupy land within what is now Glens Falls Township was Balthazar D'Angelo who purchased three rods (about ) of property on September 3rd, 1800 from David Livingston for $10 per acre ($2 per square foot). D'Angelo built a cabin on this land and started farming it soon after. D'Angelo also homesteaded some other tracts in what is now Clinton Township before moving to Glens Falls full time around 1802 or so. Today most if not all of D'Angelo's original farm buildings still stand today being used as businesses such as dairies and truck stops along with smaller remnants scattered throughout the township including one still standing on Main Street just east of Center Road near Hudson Valley High School
