Ammunition production began as early as 1795 and continued until 1865 when it was discontinued due to prohibitive costs. In 1825, a large brick factory was built in Glens Falls and remained operational until 1945. Ammunition products produced here included shot ( casing made from lead), shellac (a type of wax), powder (matchpowder made from coke and other chemicals) and bullets (made of lead, copper or other materials). The town also manufactured cannons and artillery pieces. In 1861, during the American Civil War, ammunition production resumed in Glens Falls thanks to an agreement between Union General George McClellan and local manufacturer James Fenton. Over 1 million rounds were manufactured here over the course of the war including 553 cannon projectiles which fell into Confederate hands. After the war ended, ammunition production slowly returned to normal until World War II when it recommenced under new ownership with an emphasis on military munitions such as rockets and missiles. By 1965, Glens Falls had ceased manufacturing all ammunition except for small arms like shotguns and rifles. In 1900, JB Dillon founded Dillon's Drug Store in what is now downtown Glens Falls; he would later become one of the largest drugstores ever built. In 1955, Dillon donated his entire store inventory to local charities for distribution among those in need across Chenango County during Christmas season; this event is still celebrated today as "Dillon's Night Out." In 1962, President John F Kennedy announced his intention to visit America's eastern Seacoast region during his inaugural address; he chose Glens Fall as one of five sites for his presidential inauguration ceremonies. On January 20th, 1963, President Kennedy traveled downriver from Albany via Buffalo to attend ceremonies at the falls before returning back upstream along the same route He boarded Air Force One at Elmira Airport before traveling northbound on Interstate 86 into Canada where he landed at Toronto Pearson International Airport just south of Lake Ontario before continuing northward on I-86 back into America arriving at Washington Dulles International Airport outside Washington D.C..
The Glens Falls area was first settled in 1776 by the Marcy family. The town was named after the falls, which are located about 10 miles northeast of the present-day town. By 1815, the town had a population of about 150 people and it was incorporated as a village in 1825. In 1830, Glens Falls became a part of New York State and it remained an unincorporated community until 1959 when it became a part of Glen Falls Township.
