Glens Falls, New York is a town in Niagara County, New York, United States. The population was 6,722 at the 2010 census. It lies on the west bank of the Niagara River and is within the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Glens Falls" comes from two sources: one source is from Scottish Gaelic (Gleann Fhilis), meaning "deep falls", and another source is English (Gleann Falin), meaning "lower falls". The first permanent settler in Glens Falls was David Rice in 1814. He erected a mill on the north side of the river for grinding flour for local mills. In 1825, Glens Falls became a village under the jurisdiction of Buffalo. On December 12, 1827, it merged with other villages to form what would become Niagara County. The population of Glens Falls peaked at 910 in 1920 but gradually declined as more people moved away to find jobs in Buffalo or upstate New York during the Great Depression. However, by 1970 Glens Falls had regained its previous level of population and prosperity thanks to new businesses influxes and growth opportunities spurred by technological advancements such as online shopping and online banking services available online. Glens Falls was founded in 1792 by Wm. Cady and his brothers, George and Nicholas. The town was named for the glen (a mountain peak) that lay on the eastern border of their land. In 1825, Glens Falls became a village and in 1827 it became a town. The first mayor of Glens Falls was John Prentice. In 1868, the town built its first frame courthouse and jail. In 1915, the town renamed itself Glenville after its founder’s son, Glen Cady Sr., who had died two years earlier. Theglen has been home to many famous people over the years such as Alexander Graham Bell, Irving Berlin and Loretta Lynn. Today, Glens Falls is an important center for education with more than fifty schools located within its borders. The Glens Falls area of New York was first settled by Europeans in the early 17th century. The town was founded on the east bank of the river Glens Falls, about a mile from present-day Glens Falls. In 1664, the proprietors of an estate at Great Falls donated land to form the town. A meeting house and store were built there in 1668, and a school was started in 1673. The first post office was established in 1709. In 1814, part of what is now Purchase County was ceded to New York by Canada for the purpose of forming Upper Canada as a separate country. The treaty provided for $1 million to be put into circulation as currency among the new inhabitants. This money helped finance development in both Upper and Lower Canada during this period. In 1827, Rev. John Murray officiated at consecration of Christ’s Chapel as a private chapel for ministers within the limits of Purchase Countyfree from taxation by either British or Canadian officialdom. On July 1, 1827,Glens Falls became an incorporated village under state law No 11887; it had previously been a hamlet under federal law No 6752). The population reached 2,000 by 1840; it had grown to 4,000 by 1850 when voters approved annexation into Ontario through their county clerk’s office referendum campaign; 5,500 by 1860 when they went ahead with another referendum ballot measure approving incorporation into Peel County (at that time only one county); and 7,500 by 1870 when they finally annexed Montgomery County adjacent to purchase COUNTY Business District #2 (now Niagara Region) after successfully repelling efforts made to annex them together with Seneca County since those counties shared common borders). A post office called Glenfalls opened on December 14th 1828 with three mail bags per day service until 1865 when there was only one bag per day service because of increased competition from Buffalo NYPost Office which opened its doors on January 1st 1865 . Glenfalls closed on May 15th 1965 due to low mail volumes
