Glen Cove is a town in Suffolk County, New York, United States. The population was 12,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Syracuse–New Rochelle metropolitan area. The name Glen Cove comes from Loch Glencove or "The Cove". Glen Cove was first settled in 1795 by Loyalists who fled to Canada after the American Revolution. It was originally called Westchester and then Glensville (after two small coves on Long Island). In 1814, it became part of New York State as a result of the Compromise of 1814. The original town has been shrinking since that time; its current size is 8,500 people over 6 square miles (17 km²). Today's Glen Cove sits on an ancient site where Native Americans hunted game and gathered fruit trees. A ferry crossed the Sound to reach this spot until 1795 when a permanent bridge was built across it. In 1798 an Indian trader named John Smith discovered rich lead and copper deposits near what is now Glen Cove village. This led to development around Smith's store which prospered until 1813 when gold started to be found nearby and miners began moving into the area for work in earnest. By 1840 about 75% of all lead mined in America had come from here including some rich veins near what is now downtownGlen Cove; however by 1850 only 1/3 of all lead mined had come from Finger Lakes region while most zinc came from California In 1854 local investors organized what would become known as the Village Trust Company which bought much land within today's limits with hopes of developing it into a village with schools, churches, businesses and residences for workershirting purposes only- nothing happened In 1888 Municipal Service Road No 2 extended eastward through present day Glen Cove north to Ithaca but this route never got built because there were too many objections from citizens172 years later someone finally realized that their idea may have been better than nothing so they did build it! Today’s Lodge Rd leads off Lodge Dr just past Ithaca College

The town dates back to 1614 when English colonists named it after their plantation in Scotland, Glencoe. A post office was established in 1795 and renamed Glen Cove in honor of British General James Clinton who had died during the French and Indian War. In 1833, two years after Confederation, Nassau County was formed from what were then Orange and Westchester counties and Glen Cove became part of that new county. Glen Cove's rich maritime history began with its location at an important shipping point on Long Island Sound which allowed for large-scale fishing operations until recently. Today, sailing vessels are still a vital part of the local economy with many businesses anchored off shore or based ashore including several marinas as well as some luxury hotels such as The Marriott Essex House. One significant event from Glen Cove's early days was the construction by Captain John Sloat Jr., owner and builder of chain saws (the first machine-oved chain link fence), of one of America's first toll roads - The Sloat Road - connecting Brooklyn Heights with Jamaica Bay in 1838. This major milestone helped spur development along Broadway which soon became known as "The Boulevard".
