The name "Glen Cove" is derived from a Gaelic word meaning "the glen of the harts." In 1868, it became part of New York City. The population of Glen Cove peaked at 16,828 in 1925 and has since declined significantly.Today, only 5% of its residents remain within the town limits. The history of Glen Cove began with early European settlers who arrived in search of land to farm and trade goods with Native Americans. By 1764, some families had established themselves here and named their settlement after hart (or deer) ponds or other natural features close by. Some early historians believe that this may have been due to Iroquois hunters tracking down game near these areas as they hunted wild deer during their winter migrations across much of Central America. In 1868, when New York City was created as a separate city, Glen Cove became one of its initial neighborhoods. By then, many businesses and residences had already been built hereabouts including an Episcopal church which still stands today (dedicated to Our Lady Of Mount Carmel). Other notable landmarks during this time include the old Post Office building (now used as a museum), local schoolhouse #2 which served grades K-12 for over 120 years until it was replaced by what is now Stony Brook University's campus; two hotels – one now known as The Old Forge Inn (www.oldforgeinn) and another now called Hyatt Regency Hotel; two dozen restaurants; six stores including three grocery stores; four banks – First National Bank (now JP Morgan Chase), Second National Bank (now Wells Fargo), Trust Company Building (#4) on Main Street between Broadwalk Road and Park Place; two golf courses: one now known as Links At Glen Cove Golf Club - founded in 1922 - home course since 1948 while another - simply called "Golf Course" - operated from 1915 until 1985 when it was sold to John Salazarwho renovated it into his current property holdings; five lakes: Five Corners Lake #1 off Route 9 southwest of town off County Route 2 east side near Glens Falls Dam & also providing water for Three Rivers Municipal Water District#2 well & pump stations on both sides among others
The Glen Cove area was first settled in 1772 by the Potawatomi tribe of Indians. The town was named for Colonel John Glen, a British officer who helped to explore the area. The town was founded on the site of an old trading post known as Mr. Duffy's Fort. In 1801, the United States acquired what is now New York state from Great Britain and renamed it after George Washington, Jr. The town quickly became one of the most important settlements in upstate New York. In 1827, the town passed through a series of amendments to its charter that increased its power and autonomy. In 1832, Glen Cove became a city and enjoyed considerable economic development until World War I destroyed much of it. After the war, Glen Cove experienced growth again but has since been decline in population and commerce due to suburbanization and other factors.
