Glen Cove is a town in Nassau County, New York, located on the eastern shore of Long Island. It is bordered by Islip to the north and east, Hempstead to the south, and Oyster Bay to the west. The population was 10,521 at the 2010 census. According to one source, Glen Cove may have been named after Sir John Glencoe who settled there in 1655. Other sources say that it was named for Captain James Glenn (1759-1825), who owned land adjacent to what is now Glen Cove. In 1786, John Jacob Astor bought land at present-day SpringHill Road and Glen Cove from Nicholas Sloat. In 1814, Adam Smith purchased some of Sloat's land including what is now Douglas Avenue from him for $2 million dollars.That same year, Rev. Moses Shearman donated part of his property which included modern-day Herkimer Elementary School and Middle School buildings as well as four other cottages on Beechwood Creek on what is now Westchester Avenue in Glen Cove Township (now part of Hawthorne). In 1951, Glen Cove became an independent municipality with its own police department; however, it reverted back to village status four years later when statehood requirements were met. In 1959, voters passed a resolution establishing a park system that would include Glen Cove beaches and lakeside Preserve adjacent to the village center; this park system remains in operation today despite recent annexation by neighboring Hartsdale. In 1979–1980 Glencove voters approved establishment of a city government with full powers over all matters pertaining to social services within its boundaries; this city government was eventually dissolved but continues to provide social services for residents inside Glencove limits today. During his tenure as Mayor from 1984 until 1990 Town Board Member Gerry Caruana dedicated much effort towards developing a comprehensive arts program that has resulted in numerous successful local exhibitions throughouttown since its inception including two major tours featuring world famous artists – Yoko Ono and Jeff Koons – both residing in Manhattan at that time . Glen Cove's rich history can be traced back more than three centuries ago when Scotsmen settled near present day Loch Nessie just outside of town on what is now known as Castle Beach Road - they named their community after their nearby glen where they found attractive loch water and cliffs for fishing trips (the name 'Loch Nessie' likely comes from Gaelic 'Coileach ness', meaning 'hollow place'). A few years earlier still another Scottish settlement had been established some 10 miles away on what is now known as Eldridge Road oppositepresent day Northport - these settlers called their community 'Edinburgh'. Today's economy revolves around medical research at Hofstra University; manufacturing jobs in nearby Union Towing; tourismaqul services such as weddings and golf outings for locals; commuting by boat or plane into Oneonta or other points on Long Island; and pleasure boating trips downriver from Sayville or Kingston Harbor.
