Glen Cove, NY is a town in Nassau County, New York on the Long Island Sound. The population was 10,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the South Country area of New York City. The first gun target in Glen Cove was built in 1814 by Major General Israel Putnam. From that time until 1861, all gunnery exercises were held at Fort Wadsworth on Hempstead Point. This site is now within the Glen Cove Community School District boundaries and is used for special events such as half-day rifle and pistol competitions and Model T rallies. In 1876, Colonel James Wickersham developed an ironclad gunboat named USS "Wacker" which served as agunnery target during naval maneuvers off Kingston,NY Harbor. In 1886, expenditures for targets at Fort Wadsworth were increased to $2,500 per year due to an increase in attendance at drills from students attending local high schools. At this point Captain Edward Purdy became involved with the development of targets and began ranger duty on the ship from 1889-1892 Captain Purdy's successors continued his efforts until 1899 when he resigned due to ill health Captain George Fenton took over from Captain Purdy in 1899 and continued his program until 1903 when he also resigned because of ill health In 1907 Captain Alfred Jaffe assumed command Captain Alfred Jaffe's successor Captian John Ault commanded from 1912-1915 before being promoted to rear admiral commanding Third Fleet during World War I . He left service after serving two terms as Commander American Naval Forces Europe LtGen Edwin Momyer succeeded him and commanded Fourth Fleet during World War II while Rear Adm Harry Laning led Fifth Fleet during early post war years

The first recorded use of a gun in Glen Cove was on November 5, 1795 when Captain Nicholas Cook used a rifle to shoot small game. The first shotgun was invented in 1824 by Ebenezer Colt and is now known as the Colt revolver. In 1865, the remains of General George Washington were brought back from Mount Vernon and delivered to Glen Cove for burial. On July 4, 1898, Theodore Roosevelt took part in a firing exercise at Fort Steuben National Park with his Rough Rider regiment.
Glen Cove is a town on Long Island, in the New York City metropolitan area. It is bordered by the towns of West Babylon to the north and Hempstead to the south. The population was 25,242 at the 2010 census. Glen Cove's name comes from Loch Glendower ( Gaelic: Loch Ua Ghaeilge), which means "Lake of Heather" in Scottish Gaelic. The first Europeans to visit what is now Glen Cove were Dutch fur traders who met Chief Weehawken on July 6, 1624 while exploring present-day eastern Long Island. On their return journey they stopped at a site called Pecaquidzeck Pond just east of present-day Glen Cove. The Dutch chartered a ship called "Hercules" and sailed northeast until they reached America's East Coast on September 15, 1624 – one week after its discovery by Giovanni da Verrazzano in his "Nova Guinea." At Pecaquidzeck Pond, de Verrazano had seen an animal he erroneously identified as a seal but later determined it was an Andes catfish. He named it Eudemonius peregrinus because its color resembled that of a white ermine rabbit (Eudemonius). Upon his return trip across America he reported this find to his brother, Hendrick van Braamtuin (1580-1637), who also explored the coast from what is now Montreal down to Rhode Island and back again early in 1625. A year later another group ofDutchmen discovered land beyond Cape Cod Bay when they hired two sailors named Abel Tasman to watch for a Portuguese vessel that had lost touch with Plymouth Colony during winter storms off Cape Cod Harbor on October 10–11, 1626. When they failed to find any sign of the Portuguese vessels or ships returning home, they decided not to pursue their search further and returned home without charts or stores! In fact nothing was found ashore other than some sandbars! A few years earlier English explorer John Smith had sighted land off southern Newfoundland but did not explore it because there was no water nearby suitable for irrigation development! When De Witt Clinton became President of New Netherland in 1772 he ordered Captain James Cook along with Rear Admiral Nicholas Vrooman as part of his exploration program aimed at discovering new routes into North America through Southold Passage - an important seaway connecting Asia and Europe then known only via sea lanes passing through Iceland and Norway! On April 12th 1775 Cook anchored off North Head () on Staten Island opposite today's Glen Cove while Lieutenant William Baffin rowed ashore with four canoes carrying provisions for four weeks before sailing back out into open ocean less than three months later having accomplished more exploring than any other European seafarer before him! As part of this exploratory effort Cook also landed two men here - Joseph Banks (1728-1793) author/ cartographer who founded Australia's first official settlement there in 1788 and David Ross (1750-1814) botanist/ zoologist working for James Cook aboard HMS Bounty during many surveys throughout Polynesia including Tahiti where he collected over 400 plants including 20 species never seen elsewhere before!! Today Banks' birthplace can be found within walking distance from downtownGlen Cove.- There are several places within close proximityto where George Washington once lived including Mount Vernon National Historic Site & Presidential Mansion located just outside town limits; Georgetown University located just southwest adjacentTo Stony Brook University; Saratoga Race Course located west adjacentTo White Sands Missile Range; Farmingdale Municipal Airport located east adjacentTo both townshome areas as well as numerous small businesses within easy reach hitherunder!!

Glen Cove is a small village in Nassau County, New York, United States. It was founded by Scots-Irish immigrants in 1822. The village has a population of about 350 people as of the 2010 census. The name "Glen Cove" comes from Loch Glencove, located in the area that now forms part of Glen Cove Village. The first permanent settler in Glen Cove was Andrew Gregg who built a cabin on the east side of Loch Glencove in 1822. For many years, this was the only settlement within the present day Village of Glen Cove. In 1885, John Ladd erected a sawmill and gristmill on Wolf Lake just east of today'sVillage Hall. These mills were one of several early commercial enterprises taking place within what is nowGlen CoveVillage." The first post office was established at Glen Cove in 1830 and continued until 1862 when it was moved to Peekskill. The first school opened at what is now called Old School House in 1832 and served students from both villages until 1863 when it became part of nearby Peekskill Academy. In 1865, the village merged with neighboring West Hempstead to form the new town of Hempstead (later renamed Glenville). However, after just two years, this merger also failed to take hold and local farmers successfully resisted annexation into their own town by purchasing land adjacent to their old hamlet for $2 per acre ($40 million worth today). In 1887, another attempted merger occurred when Watertown (now part of Brooklyn) annexed Glenville but this time succeeded and all residents within the merged municipality were given ballots to select one representative for them on an enlarged Board Of Supervisors which lasted until 1915 when all municipalities were reorganized into District 1 under state law which left municipal services more centralized with fewer individual boards governing them instead."
