A post office called Glen Cove was established in 1821; it remained in operation until 1959. The name derives from Loch Cavanagh (pronounced "glen cava"), which means "valley of clear water" or "clear stream". British explorer Edward Mosely explored Long Island during preparations for his Survey of America Expedition of 1820-23 and made drawings that are still viewable at Islip Head lighthouse today. On July 5th, 1830 Mosely stopped at Islip Head Light with his crew when they crossed over from Queens into Suffolk county after rounding Cape Cod Bay on their way upriver to explore what lay ahead along what is now Route 1 between Kingston Falls Road and White Sands KeyRoads National Monument (present day) northeast of Naples Airport.). This also marks where George Washington Pass opened onto Long Island proper for travelers traveling inland from Staten Island Ferry service which began operating in 1825~26
