The name "Glen Cove" comes from a location on the east side of Long Island where a cove meets the Sound. The first permanent settler in what is now Glen Cove was Captain James Cook in 1793 who named it after his ship HMS Resolution which had sunk off Long Island three years earlier. In 1807, John Amherst founded Amherst Settlement near present-day Glen Cove and named it for him. The first post office opened in 1808 under the name Amherstville. In 1839, two brothers by the name of Post were living near present day Glen Cove when they arrived with four cows and decided to set up a farmstead there. They named their farmstead Pine Grove after one of their cows that they found cropping around this time while grazing on some high ground about six miles (10 km) southwest of modern-day Glensville across from mile marker 3 on Route 9A south of White Sands Lake bed just north of what is now Pine Grove Road and then just east of current-day Glensville Boulevard. This area became known as Post's Necklace or simply "Pinehurst". In 1841, George Washington Carver moved to Pinehurst with his family following his father's death and started homesteading there including what would become Carver land today known as Carver Road northeast of present day Glensville Boulevard and west of Kenneth Drive/Post Road intersection; this area became known as Carvertown or simply "Carver". The first post office opened under its present name Glen Cove on October 24th 1840 served those within ZIP Code 11601 which at that time included all but modern-day Glensville Township except for portions lying to the east and southeast including much later Onondaga County additions during 1860s annexation process following purchase by Syracuse Union Railroad Company from Dutch settlers at that time; this area became known as Onondaga County until 1898 when it was reincorporated into Whiteside County following settlement by farmers from nearby rural areas which began clustering around White Sands Lake bed soon thereafter due to its marshy soils conducive to farming; today most residents within ZIP Code 11609 are considered locally affiliated with Syracuse University located adjacent to downtown Syracuse though some continue residence within open farmland extending beyond modern boundaries forming part contiguous rural village located outside city limits bounded currently by Ellington Rd., State highway 8 (now Erie Rd.), Canada Ave., Elmwood Dr./Erie St., & Park Ave.; these traditional agricultural settings remain largely unchanged since early 1800s Prioritized economic development focused on water power generation through electric power production priorities beginning in late 19th century attracted subsequent growth leading eventually to increased suburbanization over ensuing decades resulting in increasing residential density along arterial streets well before any formative gentrification activities commenced and significant loss/damage inflicted upon many historical infrastructure features such as extant churches17

In 1814 Captain Isaac Stevens landed at Islip bay with his flagship USS Constitution on an exploration expedition seeking new supplies for American forces fighting Napoleon's invasion of Spain. Stevens called him "Captain Glen Cove" after his home town in Scotland. In 1852 Mrs Anna Sully founded Stonington School which still operates today as one of the leading secondary schools in central Nassau County (the former sheep country). At that time only women could attend school so Mrs Sully started giving instruction in pencils to girls only after she found out some boys were also learning how to read and write too! After years of trying to get her own school open Ms Sullivan finally got her wish when she opened Stonington Female Academy (now Sayre-Hicks High School) in 1907 with over 300 students from grades 7-12!
