In 1834, George Washington Vanderbilt donated land to make into a town as a way to promote agricultural development in what was then an undeveloped area around Hempstead Bay. The first settler named Glen Cove was James Auld who arrived in 1835 from Edinburgh, Scotland. He erected a small cabin on land donated by Vanderbilt nearpresent-day Oysterbay Beach Road and named it Glen Cove after his birthplace in Fife, Scotland. Glen Cove became an incorporated village on December 12th, 1868 under the name of Vernonville after President Andrew Johnson's Interior Secretary David Willey Vernon (1787-1864). It contained a total population of 681 residents when it became an incorporated village; by 1900 it had increased to over 9600 due largely to waves of immigrants coming through the port of New York City seeking work opportunities during America's industrialization process.
