The area now known as Glen Cove was first settled in 1788 by Loyalist refugees from Ireland who had fled during the American Revolution. In 1801, the town was created from part of Newtown Valley and named for General James Glen (1755-1824), who led British troops against Washington during the War of 1812. Glen Cove initially consisted of a small number of homes and farms around its core business district which included stores, mills and factories soon became obsolete with advances in transportation and communication. The community underwent rapid growth after it became home to both US Naval Base Commander Rear Admiral John Waddell's Departmental Headquarters as well as other naval activities including antisubmarine warfare training exercises with USS "Cheyenne" on Long Island Sound between 1922 and 1925 followed by gunnery demonstrations off Sandy Hook Point in 1916 aboard USS "Saratoga". These naval exercises helped promote tourism throughout Nassau County which grew rapidly due to their location just minutes away from major metropolitan areas such as New York City and Buffalo. This growth continued until World War II when military activity moved ashore making it difficult for civilians to visit or live within sight of warships. During World War II, many residents decided to leave Glen Cove because they were fearful that bombing raids would hit their towns hard; however few returned after the war ended while most left permanently due to housing shortages brought on by postwar-era industrialization combined with high inflation rates caused by hyperinflationary conditions abroad which reached unprecedented levels in North America at that time. In 1960, an agreement was made between the Town Board of Glen Cove and Great East Side Corporation (GRECo) allowing GRECo to build a shopping mall adjacent to US Naval Base Commander Rear Admiral John Waddell's Departmental Headquarters - one of only two similar agreements made between public agencies and private developers during that era. The mall quickly became one of Nassau County's most popular tourist destinations attracting people from all over New York State; however its success did not last long as various businesses closed down durring its early years including Sears & Roebuck who vacated their store after adoptingazon methods for pricing merchandize instead relying solely on markups resulting in significant losses each year; this pattern continued until 1984 when GEICO pulled out citing deterioration in sales results following changes at company headquarters unrelated to local market conditions). Glen Cove is a small town in Nassau County, New York, United States. It is the easternmost town on Long Island and lies east of the mainland on the north bank of the East River. The population was 5,097 at the 2010 census. The first permanent settler in what is now Glen Cove was Jameson Fitzpatrick in 1795. The name may be derived from a Indian word meaning "safe haven." In 1814, General John Honeyman founded Fort Niagara to protect settlers along the East River from British incursions. The fort became abandoned in 1820 and was destroyed by fire in 1824. A new fort was built at present-day Glen Cove in 1830 and served as a customs post for six years before being decommissioned. In 1872, Thomas Waddell purchased 2,000 acres (800 hectares) of land northeast of Glen Cove from Sir George Stephenson for $5,000. Waddell began to develop his land into what is now Glen Cove Village with frame houses and barns used as farmsteads until he sold it to Captain John Stevens in 1905 for $25,000. Captain Stevens donated his house and acreage to the village for use as its first government building which still stands today - also known as "Stevens House". In 1907, President Theodore Roosevelt visited New York City and spent time at One Hundred Mile Point naval base on Manhattan's Upper West Side before returning home via ferry across the East River to New Hyde Park on Long Island where he dined at Governor Beecher's palace before visiting Woodstock National Laboratory near Oxford Junction on Long Island Sound
Glen Cove was first settled in 1792. In 1824, the land that now comprises Glen Cove and its environs was purchased by George Washington Vanderbilt from the heirs of John D’Arcy Gardiner. The town was named for General James Clinton Forbes who fought in the War of 1812. It became a hamlet in 1870 and a borough in 1899. In 1961, it merged with neighboring Springwater to form the current borough of Glen Cove-Springwater.
