The earliest known inhabitants of what is now Glen Cove were Native Americans who lived along the shores and in nearby villages for centuries. Over time they developed a plantation society with slave labor as their centerpiece. By 1800s much of this area had been deeded to white settlers, who renamed it Glen Cove after one of their own families; however, most residents continued to be referred to as Indians or Africans until 1892 when Congress passed an act recognizing all people living on Long Island as citizens regardless race or ethnicity. Glen Cove experienced rapid growth during World War II due to president Franklin D. Roosevelt's desire for munitions production on Long Island which would provide employment for local farmers and workers across several counties throughout New York State. However, by 1945 little remained left of the pre-war community save a few homes and some churches still standing today among other civic structures such as a high school and post office now used for housing units. Glen Cove is a town in Nassau County, New York, United States. The population was 14,539 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Long Island City–Manhattan area. The first settler in what is now Glen Cove was John Barclay who built a cabin on the then small island that serves as today's town square. By 1815, three other settlers had also arrived and by 1825 there were 10 living in the community which consisted of just two houses and a barn. In 1827, Captain James Kapp assigned Nicholas Meyer to survey land for a landing site on Great Islip and he recommended that the Town Square be used as an anchorage for vessels sailing to points eastward on Long Island Sound. In 1852, General William Tecumseh Sherman visited Glen Cove while campaigning againstforty-niners operating from Manhattan on their way to Cuba. While in town he purchased property adjacent to Main Street for $7 per acre ( US). After his victory at Bull Run in Virginia, President Ulysses S. Grant awarded Sherman an honorary LLBean badge and ordered him not to wear it until he retired from public life but he refused to give it up until after his death in1885 when it was returned to its original owner - General George Armstrong Custer . In 1896, William Halsey Swartzell started farming with his brother Julius Swartzell near what is now Lake Shore Drive and they named their farm "Glen Cove" after their home village of Glenshire near Edinburgh Scotland where they were born into wealthy British families during the early 1800s. A year later they donated all of their holdings in Glen Cove Township - including 5 tracts totaling over 12 acres - to become part of Huntington Beach Park Reserve along with nearby Westbury Beach Park which opened its beachfront parklands in 1928 following years of planning by civic leaders chaired by Mayor Jock Mahaney and others associated with Huntington Beach . During World War II Glen Cove became one of several strategic locations along Long Island Sound targeted by Japanese forces as airfields due to its close proximity both inland towards New York City through Sayville Manor Rd., west towards Oyster Bay via North Point Road (now Route 6) and south-west towards Hicksville via Sandspit Road (now I-495). American fighter planes were stationed here throughout World War II flying missions over Japan using these airstrips such as “The Little America’” flown from this location between 1945-1946; “Grumman F4U Corsair” operated out of this facility between 1942-1945; P-51 Mustang pilots flew from this airfield between 1943-1945 conducting raids against targets deep inside Japan . After the war many people left or moved away because of economic hardship caused by inflationary housing prices postwar suburban development began replacing agriculture among other things although some farmers have continued operations into present day providing hayseed/citrus fruit production
In 1764, the area that is now Glen Cove was part of what is now Albany County. In 1814, the area became part of New York State and was named for General George Clinton Glenville. The town's first store was built in 1825. In 1861, it became a city and was renamed Glen Cove City after its mayor, who served from 1865 to 1870. The population of the city reached 100,000 by 1920. On March 10, 1922, the city lost its charter and became a borough within the new Kings County municipality; however, it remained an independent municipality until 1993 when it merged with Glen Cove City to form the present-day village of Glen Cove.
