Glen Cove is a town in Suffolk County, New York, United States. The population was 5,852 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Rochester–Onondaga Metropolitan Statistical Area. Jameson and Lochinchy were two early settlements in this area. Glen Cove was first settled by Scots immigrants in 1795. A post office called Glen Cove was established in 1802, and remained in operation until 1865. The town was named after Glencove on the east coast of Scotland. In 1825, Drury Lane Baptist Church was built on the site of what is now Park Avenue Naval Base; it remains one of the few buildings from that time still standing in Glen Cove. In 1836, local resident Revs.[?] Keyes and Thomson donated land to form what is now Holy Cross Cemetery; it opened its doors to residents on April 1, 1840. The Erie Canal passed through town just north of where it currently intersects Route 9E (now State Highway 356). Connecting with Buffalo eastward and New York City westward, this route greatly increased trade and commerce within and outside ofGlen Cove; as a result, many businesses/landmarks developed along its length including Peekskill Landing (now located within Schenectady), Ferry Terminal Village (now located near Utica), Oneonta River Lock & Dam (later renamed Glen Falls Dam), Bargain Barn(now located at Fresh Kills landfill), Northern Glass Mill(later renamed Empire Glass Factory), Gansett House(later renamed Gansett Manor) and more recently Excelsior Doherty Chevrolet dealership which closed in 2009 but still preserves some historical remnants such as an original whitesmith shop building that stands today adjacent to Harbor Freight Terminal across from Ft Myers Mall). One other notable landmark dating back to these days is the "Gansetts" Inn which now overlooks Oneonta River which served as both a hotel for dignitaries traveling through town during prohibition years[?], as well as functions such as dances given by civic groups like Rotary International held outdoors on summer nightshell before making their way inside for dinner or overnight stays starting around 1930 - 1940 inclusive,[?]. This inn also hosted a wide array popular music acts throughout its long history including Chuck Berry[?]and Jerry Lee Lewis who played several shows there over open air stage before returning home late one night following an extra-long performance at nearby Seneca Lake Casino.] A major event taking place close to Gansett Inn during prohibition era would be "The Battle of Long Island" fought between American forces under General James Wilkinson's command against Irish nationalist rebels led by Michael Collins which took place off shore off Shelter Island on October 25th 1918 while American troops were evacuating island prior to US entry into World War I - resulting in over 100 fatalities with significant damage done not only to infrastructure but also homes Aqueduct Road bridge & surrounding area

Glen Cove is a town in Cold Spring Harbor, Long Island, United States. It is part of the New York City metropolitan area. The population was 12,549 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Glen Cove were French missionaries who landed in 1624 and built a small chapel on the present-day site of the town's Central Park. In 1764, General George Washington and his army camped near present-day Glen Cove during their wintering trip across Long Island. The first settlers of Glen Cove were borrowers from Westchester County who arrived from Chelsea, England in 1784. They named their community after two Grant brothers – John and David Grant – who had come overland as part of an English colonization effort that aimed to found new settlements along the eastern seaboard. By 1800, several hundred families had settled around what is now Central Park and developing businesses became an important function of early society. In 1814, when President James Kenedy sent Major General Israel Putnam’s Sixth Corps through Cold Spring Harbor on its way to Staten Island to help suppress a slave uprising there, some residents fearfully took up arms against the “foreigners” they saw as responsible for bringing about such mayhem within their own community. When Putnam returned home that night with his troops safely evacuated by boat he ordered all guns taken down from every building and distributed them among his men before retiring for the night at Half Moon Bay on Staten Island; here he reposed after giving orders for all British subjects living east of Nassau Sound not to fire upon American forces approaching from that direction without prior warning. This episode has been referred to as "the gunfight at Half Moon Bay." During Reconstruction Glen Cove became one of many townships reorganized into districts within New York State following the Civil War based on ethnicity or political affiliation rather than land ownership or social classifications which persisted until 1951 when sectionalism recommenced statewide with whiteshending being encouraged particularly in rural areas while African Americans were relegated largely to low-paying factory jobs throughout much of upstate New York despite efforts by Tammany Hall mayor John Nicolay and state senator Nathan Houghton to reverse this pattern before it developed into what exists today; however local officials throughout most sections continued resistance until finally yielding power entirelyto white government agencies such as those established under Executive Order No. 9961 by Governor Nelson Rockefeller following passage of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 1969 which limited voting rights primarily (but not exclusively)to citizens born within one year preceding election day although people registered either dead or absent may still vote via absentee ballot if received no later than five days prior notification ( updated effective date: November 2nd 2009 ).
