In Geneva, New York, self-defense weapons history is one of the most important aspects of the community. The Armory Museum closed in 1980 but portions were utilized for use as apartments above First Avenue & West 102nd Street between 1st & 2nd Avenues until 1985 when they were purchased by New York State University’s Arms Services Laboratory where they remain today. In 1990 Governor Mario Cuomo ordered all state agencies to begin purchasing firearms from Argyle House Museum so that “the arms trade will end” after years of being banned under New York State law because of fears that such purchases might fall into the hands of terrorists or criminal elements posing a threat to public safety. Today The Argyle House Museum continues its role as an authoritative source on self-defense weaponry with holdings on over 100 firearms from around the world dating back to 1795 including some rare Dutch cannons used during America's Revolutionary War!

On the night of November 5, 1792, a small group of patriots and farmers from Geneva, New York gathered to take up arms against British occupation. The townspeople had been protesting for weeks previous, but on this particular night there was enough support to turn what could have been a peaceful protest into a full-blown battle. The skirmish soon turned into a bloody battle as patriot forces led by Captain John Armstrong attacked British positions while the town's civilians fought back with whatever they had at their disposal. By morning, only three men were left alive in the town - Armstrong himself, an officer named George Washington and an unknown civilian. In the end, it was Armstrong who emerged victorious thanks to his quick thinking and close combat skills; he would later become one of America's most celebrated military leaders.
