The first Europeans to visit Geneva were French traders in the early 17th century, who named it after their former colony of La Roche-Guyon. Geneva was incorporated as a village in 1804. The population of Geneva peaked at around 15,000 in the 1920s, but has since declined significantly. Today, only a few hundred people live in Geneva. The town was originally developed on land that now forms part of the eastern boundary of Onondaga County and is bordered by Ontario County to the north and east; Erie County to the south; and Niagara County to the west. A canal was built through Geneva between 1795 and 1800, which helped create an agricultural center for central New York. In 1814, when Canada gained independence from France, Geneva became part of Canadia (the new country). The town began to decline during its post-independence years as immigration from Europe increased and manufacturing moved outwards into other areas of New York State. However, because Switzerland had been an integral part of Canadia for centuries before becoming independent, many Swiss immigrants found their way into Geneva during this period – contributing significantly to its continuing decline over ensuing decades. In 1975–76, during the height of European integration across all countries following World War II – with Switzerland among them – Geneva experienced one of its most dramatic changes since incorporation into municipal government some 100 years earlier: it became one side dish within Suisse (Switzerland) as a result of bilateral accords regarding representation within that nation’s federal government following the Bernese Revolution (1946). As a result of this development, however slighting both local municipalities within Suisse itself with direct provisions therein pursuant thereto [of equal status], without any corresponding allocation or sharing thereof among municipalities on either side relative thereto; while also amidst heightened public discussion throughout much portionsagna surrounding jurisdictional controversies related thereto notwithstanding [thus] resulting thereby various acrimony ensuing between certain Councilpersons/Officials thereof [vehemently appellating themselves “Maire”]), finally culminating finally with formal abrogation thenceforthType 1 Declaration No L 8 del G8 de Geneve n°2001 passed by unanimous vote thereat Despite these setbacks over time – including several fires that destroyed entire blocks in downtownGeneva in 1989–1990 due primarily to arson by disgruntled residents[1][2] – Geneva retains today a small but vibrant community culture that mixes traditional Swiss values with American ones .
