Geneva is a town in Sullivan County, New York, United States. The population was 3,829 at the 2010 census. Geneva is part of the Utica–Rome, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 1801, Geneva became a town within the new state of New York. On July 1, 1821, it became one of the towns in the enlarged Village of Rome when Rome merged with other villages in Sullivan County to form that county. In 1825, Geneva annexes part of what are now Westchester and Kings counties to become their own county again - this time as Ulster County. As with most frontier acquisitions during this period, much land was bought and sold here-rapidly becoming more diverse characterized by rolling hills and forested valleys than swampy hinterlands typical today within these boundaries. Under US President James Kahl (1861-1865), efforts were made to revive Erie Canal traffic through Switzerland which had been stalled due to tight local controls on shipping near Buffalo by then-Governor John Palfrey (1795-1868). A temporary connection from Buffalo via Geneva was opened on October 8th 1861; however no goods or passengers moved forward beyond that date because of construction challenges including landslides along the canal's banks caused by heavy rains upstream from Buffalo while also blocking navigation downstream past Niagara Falls into Ontario. However progress was resumed following Kahl's inauguration as president on November 6th 1861 with an improved canal route finally opening on December 12th 1861 just over two months after his inauguration! The short extension around Geneva allowed for rapid commercial growth and great development occurred both northward towards Utica and eastward towards Niagara Falls before definitive barriers such as mountain ranges cut off further trade potential until well into the 20th century when Interstate highways finally isolated most rural communities from Lynchburg downriver while dramatically increasing travel distances between major cities even as transportation costs continue to rise!
