In 1795, the French colony of Geneva was founded by a group of Swiss Francophiles. The city quickly became a center for political and religious debate in what was then a largely Protestant society. In 1802, the city annexed the neighboring town of Vaud and formed the canton of Vaud. On October 15, 1814, during the Napoleonic Wars, General Jean Lannes besieged and captured Geneva from Swiss forces under Bernhardi. As part of his prisoner exchange program, Lannes offered to hand over Geneva's entire population to Napoleon if he were to be granted control over Switzerland. This offer won Napoleon's favor and he agreed to give Geneva back to the Swiss in 1815. The city continued to grow rapidly during its post-Napoleonic years as it became an important commercial center with its own currency and free trade zone. In 1830, Geneva joined the International Confederation of Nations and began representation on global bodies such as UNESCO. During World War II, Geneva played a significant role in Allied efforts against Nazi Germany by providing food and munitions supplies while also hosting key government officials including Supreme Commander Patton's headquarters during Operation Market Garden. After the war ended, reconstructionefforts began which led to many new buildings being built in what is now known as The City Centre district.
