Some famous residents include Andrew Carnegie who built his mansion overlooking Main Street while still mayor of Pittsburgh; Benjamin Franklin who served as first U.S. Minister to France under James Ketchum; Woodrow Wilson who became president after turning down an offer from Napoleon III; John F Kennedy who was assassinated here; Lester Pearson who led Canada through World War II before becoming Prime Minister; Henry Kissinger - later President Nixon's Secretary of State - whose family home overlooks Main Street; and thousands more examples scattered throughout the cityscape that make up what some call "theGeneva Experience."
Grenville was founded by the first settlers in 1770. It became a city on June 3, 1837, and was named for General John Grenville (1751-1827), an American Revolutionary War general and statesman who served as the first U.S. Ambassador to Great Britain.
