Ammunition history in Geneva, New York goes back to the 1840s. In 1847, the first shot from a cannon was fired in this city. A year later, on September 12th of that year, the first artillery bombardment of Geneva took place. The shelling lasted for almost two hours and inflicted heavy losses on the enemy. The Treaty of Paris ended World War I and brought an end to hostilities in Europe. However, battles continued throughout much of 1919 between Germany and Austria-Hungary over control over Hungarian lands west of the Carpathians. As a result, artillery fire continued unabated throughout these months- creating extensive damage and loss among both sides. In 1921–1922, during World War II, Geneva experienced its heaviest bombardment yet when more than 150 shells were fired at various points within its boundaries

Nonetheless, Geneva remains an attractive destination for tourists who appreciate its history and culture as well as its beautiful setting on both banks of the Mohawk River
