Garden City is a small city in upstate New York. It was founded in 1884 by the merger of two villages, Garden and City. The population was 9,600 at the 2000 census. Garden City is located on the north bank of the Hudson River and is bordered to the east by Fishkill County and to the south by Rockland County. To the north it adjoins rural land with rolling hills and large parks. The early settlers in Garden City were farmers who had come from Ulster County, Ireland. They cultivated corn, wheat, rye, oats, potatoes and other vegetables near their homes. By 1890 there were 10 churches in Garden City; all were Protestant denominations. A sawmill was built in 1898; it remained operational until 1957. The first school was built in 1902; it became a high school in 1966. In 1897 an electrical substation was built just outside of town to provide power for businesses and homes within town limits; it remains operational today as a museum operated by local government officials. Garden City grew rapidly during World War I because of its proximity to manufacturing plants throughout New York State which produced munitions such as artillery shells and tanks for use in World War I. However, when America entered World War II, production ceased due to rationing which affected every sector of society including food production. After the war ended, business picked up again but slowly because of new technologies that had emerged since then such as refrigeration technology which made goods available at any time of day or night without having them spoil or go bad like milk did before refrigeration became common knowledge In 1951–1952 an interchange station on Interstate 95 named after Mayor James Fenton (1951-1958) served as a stop for traffic between Fishkill Valley Junction (now Sayreville) on USMA Route 20 westbound and Canandaigua on NY 5 eastbound while also serving as an interchange with Pennsylvania Avenue coming down from Albany via I-287 northwestward . TheSad Sack Inn restaurant opened adjoining this interchange during this period . The late 1960s through early 1970s saw heavy industrial growth along I-95 across central southern New York State caused largely by DEC's decision to build two massive nuclear reactors adjacent to each other at Oneida Lake – one about halfway between Syracuse NY andremoved from service due to safety concerns following Three Mile Island ; however these reactors never went into operation despite widespread speculation they would do so due largely to DEC’s overreach . As a result many factories closed down or moved out entirely leaving little physical evidence behind except for abandoned housing stock typical of post-industrial areas aroundNCRIsPeak employment areas

Garden City is a town in Rockland County, New York, United States. The population was 7,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New York City metropolitan area. Garden City is located on the southern tip of Long Island. The first settlers in what is now Garden City arrived in 1638 and were led by Captain John Smith. He named his new settlement after himself, Gardenia (later renamed Kingston). At first all residents were farmers, but as the land became more fertile and available, some traders and businessmen moved into the town to observe local trade routes and make money from shipping goods around Long Island Sound. In 1764-65 General James Wolfe's army passed through Garden City on its way to victory over British forces at Saratoga; many of Wolfe's officers stopping here for rest and refreshment before continuing their journey. In 1815-1816 Governor David Levy built a summer home near present-day Jericho Beach for use as his gubernatorial mansion during his term as governor of New York. After leaving office he donated the property to Garden City Trust which continues to operate it today as a public park with woodlands, ponds, gardens, tennis courts, gymnasiums and other features typical of such institutions at that time In 1881 Alexander Graham Bell founded his experimental telephone company here while living in nearby Ronkonkoma; Bell later called this site "the birthplace of American telecommunications." The company's first transmitter was located here in 1922 During World War II parts of Garden City were used as an airfield by RAF Bomber Command; these include North Lawn Airfield #3 (now North Park), South Lawn Airfield #1 (now South Park) and West Lawn Airfield #2 (now Westchester Airport). A small amount also developed into Bedford Army Field#5a when Bedford Aircraft Corporation leased an old球場 from East View Farms Inc., who had operated it since 1915 until they sold it to Gardner Aeronautics Corporation in 1942 for use as an Experimental Aircraft Range known then simply as "Bedford Field". After World War II most of these fields reverted back to agricultural use but some still remain open today including North Lawn Airfield #3 which reopened in 2018 following years worth $50 million restoration effort
Garden City was laid out in 1814 by Nicholas-Jacques Conte as a small community on the west bank of the Raritan River. It grew rapidly, and by 1828 had become a thriving commercial center with its own market and post office. By 1850, Garden City had enough residents to incorporate as a city, and it soon became one of the most important industrial and commercial centers in New York State. In 1916, Garden City became an incorporated town, which continued to grow until it reached its current size.
