As development continued to occur around this area – especially along Riverside Drive – Garden City emerged as one of North America's leading suburbs communities In 1915, when World War I began with Austria-Hungary invading Hungary (), some residents of GardenCity decided to arm themselves and join forces with other local patriots in support of their government brethren overseas (). At that time all Americans were required by law to serve in uniform (). After successfully recruiting over 1,000 men from various parts of north Brooklyn (), GardenCITY() came into being as an officially sanctioned "national enclave" within Brooklyn under Lieutenant Colonel Arthur MacArthur ()
